Ai Khai — the spirit boy of Wat Chedi in Sichon, Nakhon Si Thammarat — is southern Thailand's most explosive devotional phenomenon: a temple boy said to have served Luang Pu Thuad, bound by a vow to guard the temple forever. Devotees repay granted wishes with firecrackers and rooster figurines by the millions. Here is the legend, the wish-making custom, the amulets, and how to visit respectfully.
Ai Khai of Wat Chedi: The Temple Boy Who Never Broke His Promise
At Wat Chedi in Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat, the sound of firecrackers can be heard from morning until evening. Each explosion is more than a celebration—it is a thank-you offering from someone who believes a wish has been granted.
Wat Chedi is home to **Ai Khai** (Thai: ไอ้ไข่), affectionately known as “Egg Boy.” He is believed to be the spirit of a young temple boy who helps devotees with lottery luck, business success, protection, lost belongings, and other practical wishes.
Over the past decade, Ai Khai has become one of the most famous devotional figures in southern Thailand.
The Boy Who Kept His Promise
According to local tradition, Ai Khai was a boy of around nine or ten who accompanied the revered southern monk **Luang Pu Thuad** during a journey toward Ayutthaya.
When they stopped at the location of present-day Wat Chedi, Luang Pu Thuad sensed that the land would one day become an important center of Buddhism. He instructed the boy to remain there and guard the sacred ground.
Ai Khai promised that he would.
One version of the legend says that when the boy later sensed his master returning, he feared that he might be asked to leave the temple. Leaving would mean breaking his promise. To remain forever, he entered the temple pond and gave up his life, binding his spirit to the land.
Devotees believe that Ai Khai has protected Wat Chedi ever since.
This is also why promises made to him are taken seriously. The boy kept his own promise at the cost of his life, so worshippers believe he expects others to keep theirs.
How People Make Wishes to Ai Khai
The custom is simple and direct.
A devotee states a wish clearly before Ai Khai’s statue and promises a specific offering if the wish is granted. Once the request is fulfilled, the devotee must return and provide exactly what was promised.
Common offerings include:
* **Firecrackers**, the most famous offering
* **Rooster statues**, ranging from small figurines to enormous sculptures
* **Camouflage clothing**
* **Dark sunglasses**
* **Slingshots and toys**
* **Red soft drinks**
Large strings of firecrackers are set off throughout the day at the temple. Some devotees commission tens of thousands—or even more—as repayment for major wishes.
The most important rule is simple:
**Never promise Ai Khai something you cannot deliver.**
Ai Khai Amulets
Wat Chedi has produced a number of documented Ai Khai amulet and statue editions. He is commonly depicted as a young boy, sometimes holding a slingshot.
Devotees wear or keep these sacred objects for:
* Unexpected financial luck
* Business popularity
* Protection of homes and shops
* Assistance in finding lost belongings
* General good fortune
Because Ai Khai has become extremely popular, many commercial copies and unofficial reproductions have appeared. Collectors should pay attention to the temple, edition, year of creation, ceremony, and provenance.
Ai Khai is sometimes compared with Kumanthong, but the two traditions are not the same.
Ai Khai and Kumanthong: What Is the Difference?
A Kumanthong is traditionally treated as a spirit child adopted into a household. The owner cares for it, speaks to it, and provides food, drinks, or toys.
Ai Khai remains the guardian spirit of Wat Chedi.
People travel to his temple, make requests, and return to repay their promises. Wearing an Ai Khai amulet may preserve a connection with him, but major promises are traditionally fulfilled at Wat Chedi.
One can be understood as a spirit child belonging to a household. The other is a powerful local guardian who continues to serve his temple.
Visiting Wat Chedi
Wat Chedi is located in Sichon district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province.
It is approximately:
* One hour by car from Nakhon Si Thammarat city
* Around ninety minutes from Surat Thani Airport
Morning is a good time to visit, although the firecracker offering area remains active throughout much of the day.
Visitors should dress modestly, behave respectfully, and remember that Wat Chedi is an active Buddhist temple rather than simply a tourist attraction. The temple pond is closely connected to the legend of Ai Khai and should be treated with particular respect.
Nakhon Si Thammarat is also home to Wat Phra Mahathat and is closely associated with the Jatukam Ramathep tradition, making the province especially interesting for people studying Thai amulets and folk beliefs.
